SON FINDS MOTHER after years of separation.

July 12th, 2010

One of the MOST JOYFUL  moments in this work, is seeing families reunited!  During the 14 years of civil wars many Liberians were separated from their families.  They often  had no clue if their family members were still alive.  Today more and more families are finding each other!

Thousands witnessed the brutal death of their loved ones as rockets and gunfire exploded all around them.  In terror they fled in all directions, often losing the whereabouts of each other in the frenzy.    Many  left on foot to neighbouring countries, like Guinea, Ivory Coast or Ghana.  Others escaped by boat.   To this very day so many are trying to locate their family members, even “within” Liberia.  Whenever possible Provision of Hope will try to help.   We also help refugees resettle back home.

This past January one of our sons, SUMO GIBSON, was reunited with his mother!   For years Sumo would search for his mother, always hoping, but never finding her.  There was an ache in his heart that would never go away.  It seemed like he knew, she was still alive somewhere, the question was where?    I will never forget the look on Sumo’s face when he came back from his search accompanied by his mother!  What a day!

Mamie, Sumo’s mother was overjoyed to see us, and could not stop thanking Provision of Hope,  for taking care of her children.  Mamie, grows vegetables on a small piece of land in the interior.  We gave her 200 dollars to boost her small business.

Decontee, ( Sumo’s sister) Mother Mamie and Sumo Gibson are so happy they all survived the war.  Today they are safely together!

Decontee was raised by a widow woman named Ma Martha.  When her father was killed in the war, her mother became very ill and was not able to take care of her family.  Ma Martha had so very little herself, but she shared the little she had.  One day Provision of Hope came with Sumo to see the condition of his sister.  It was so poor!  They lived in a run down hovel.  There was little food and no mattresses.  Many nights they would go to bed cold and hungry.  For years Decontee was not in school, for lack of funds.  I will never forget the day, we were able to tell Decontee that she could go to school with her friends.  Sumo said she didn’t sleep all night!  At that time we helped Ma Martha move to a new community where they had a better quality of life.   In addition to food and clothes, we gave her money to boost her little coal business.  Today she sells small food items at a little stand in front of her home.

Decontee is in highschool now, doing very well in all her subjects.  She is also a great soccer player!  Her dream is to  become a nurse.  She has no sponsor, so if anyone would like to sponsor a very precious young girl, please get in touch with us.

MA MARTHA, DECONTEE AND HER MOTHER MAMIE

We have 13 of our boys at My Father’s House who would like to see their families too.     They have been begging to do this now for months.  For many they have  just located their families, after years of separation. Some have both parents who were killed in the war, but others do have mothers or grandmothers, aunts or uncles, they know about,  who survived the war.  The boys who are asking to see their relatives are:  Jackson Gbour, Patrick Goh,  Randall Doegmah, Uriah Marcus, Francis Darlieh, Michael Gbahn, Dominic Roberts, Timothy Nurson, Reuben Gea, Lougon Wonbiah, Joseph Sackie, and James Kollie.

I have felt very strongly that it would be good to let these boys go for a visit to their families, now during  their school break.  In order to do this we will need funding.  For each of the boys it will cost  50 – 75 dollars to visit, depending which county they will travel to.

If you can help with this, please email me, Karen Barkman at provisionofhope@yahoo.ca  We also take credit cards by phone.  You can call  to Provision of Hope 250-454-9456

We give tax receipts both in the US and Canada.

Any contribution towards this would be most appreciated.

My Father’s House Visit 2010

March 13th, 2010

MY FATHER’S HOUSE boys were as welcoming as always when we arrived back home in Liberia on January 20th.  They had signs posted everywhere and greeted us with their usual welcoming songs.  “ Mama we Love you!!” Yes, I am very blessed!!

I really did feel like I was COMING HOME!!

I really did feel like I was COMING HOME!!

What an incredible privilege to be RAISING  UP LEADERS who will take a bold stand for Jesus Christ.  Four of our young men were water baptized on January 3rd.  These were Luogon Wonbiah, Konneh Taweh, Paul Barchue and Lasana Joseph.  Each one has an amazing testimony!

Right now we have  a total of 66 youth in our program.  38 are in highschool.  28 are in college, university, trade school or working at a small business.  Most of our youth are boys, but we do have a few girls who live out in rented rooms. These are sisters to our boys.  37 of our boys live at My Father’s House, the Discipleship Training Center, and our nearby apartments.  These places are all in the same neighbourhood, all very close together.  Our cooks are kept busy feeding so many students.

The others live out in rented rooms, or at Cuttington University in Bong County.  They come home on breaks. I want to say a big thank you to all our sponsors who make this possible.  You are the people who are generously giving and “including” them in your families.  Really that is what counts the most!

Joseph Sackie, Henry Dorbor, Patrick Goh, Frank Julutoe, Uriah Marcus, Daniel Coleman, Sumo Gibson and Dominic Roberts are among many in the house who love to sing

YOUTH WITH A MISSION spent 3 months leading a Discipleship Training School with over 40 of our young people.  What a life changing experience for some of them!

The  first topic was THE FATHER HEART OF GOD. How appropriate for our boys who have no fathers. Most fathers were killed in the war.  Other topics were…

  • Stewardship and Servant Hood
  • Integrity
  • Violence and Drug Abuse
  • Spiritual Warfare
  • Worldview and Faith
  • The Holy Spirit and Spiritual Gifts
  • Relationships and Team Dynamics
  • Quiet Time and Spiritual Growth
  • Evangelism and Personal Soul Winning
  • Cross Cultural Issues and HIV/AIDS

Provison of Hope became partners with YWAM in January 2009.  Jamel and Yeayea are outstanding people who pour into the youth of Liberia.   After the training sessions, our boys went out into the community to share their faith with others.  Ruben Gea came back saying, “ I didn’t know it was so easy to lead people to Jesus!!”  Today he is one of the team leaders in evangelism and they go out on a regular basis inviting the lost to find “Life in Christ”   For this primary reason we are called to RAISE UP
DISCIPLES.

Jesus is THE WAY, THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE!

  Malcolm Resized

Provision of Hope Team Liberia welcomes  Malcolm Harris as our new Youth Director!!   He is the overseer of more than 50 young students who are in our care.  PLEASE REMEMBER TO PRAY FOR HIM. Malcolm comes trained in missions and evangelism, having graduated from the Maranatha School of Ministry in Ghana.   He has a heart after God and moves led of the Spirit.  He leads by example, and has a  vision to see our boys become strong Followers of Jesus Christ.   Provision of Hope is investing in highschool and university  students who are being trained as LEADERS OF INTEGRITY.   Our values and goals include:

1. To be a Devoted Follower of  Jesus Christ

2.  To have a Healthy Self  Identity

3.  To achieve a Good Education

4.  To participate in Work Projects and Contribute to Others

These young leaders are being raised up to fight in the battle for MERCY + JUSTICE.  Each one has a story of a very DIFFICULT JOURNEY, making it through 14 years of civil war.  These are the leaders who will help rebuild this war torn nation and see a NEW LIBERIA!!

TWENTY NEW STUDENTS have arrived in August and every room is filled in both My Father’s House, The Discipleship Training Center and the nearby apartments that we rent for students.  We have had to add to our food supply because of the number of students we are feeding.  Jason Nightingale, of Wordsower International is our partner in this work, and provides the funding each month for food!   We are still needing funding for school fees next semester.  Christmas is coming, at which time we try to give each student 50.00 for new clothes.  They all desperately need clothes and shoes!   If you know of anyone who would donate for this, could you please contact me  karen@provisionofhope.com  or                 phone 250-454-9456  See below for donation instructions.
