Our Widows Sing for Joy

This year, we celebrated “World Old Folks Day” with our Matadi Widows’ Group on October 4th! What a day of celebration! It was also my birthday! Of course, they all sang Happy Birthday for me and showered me with blessings. I loved it!!

Every year, we celebrate the International Day of Older Persons with our Matadi Widows.

It’s a large community gathering held in the community hall, ensuring plenty of space for everyone. The 2025 theme, “Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being, and Our Rights,” highlighted the important contributions older adults make to their communities and the world.

We had a live local band and served everyone a tasty moringa drink made with fresh fruit. Special thanks go to Daniel Coleman for organizing the event. John Kucuyoiyoigee, our Director of Organic Agriculture, also gave an insightful talk on the benefits and nutritional value of moringa.

Our widows have purpose. They live with respect and dignity. You should hear them pray and worship; they are strong in faith and know how to encourage each other. Many still care for children even at their age and run small markets to survive.

We now have seven widow groups in different locations throughout Liberia, with over 600 members in total. The churches are involved, and each group has a committee in charge. They send their monthly reports to Daniel Coleman, the overseer of our Mercy Ministry. Daniel has so much love and compassion for this work, and they all know it.

Happy Widows

As often as we have funds, we like to give out pharmacy “over-the-counter” drugs to those suffering from chronic pain. It is always a happy day for them when they receive medicines. A local pharmacy assistant visits to explain the proper use of the medicines to the widows, ensuring they understand how to take them safely and effectively. This guidance helps them manage their health and gain confidence in caring for themselves.

We are so grateful for Sharon Nightingale and the partnership of Wordsower International. They are a reliable support for this ministry.  Provision of Hope and Wordsower have been partners since 2005. They handle all our US donations with no admin fees. What a huge blessing!

Thank you to all our donors who give to make this work possible!  Every time I see the smiles on their faces as they leave with their rice bags, it reminds me of the words of Job. “ I made the widow’s heart to sing” Job 29:13.
