Let us give a shout-out to one of our most outstanding students, Evelyn Wallace! Not only is she the top student in her class, and also a role model for other youth. Evelyn has a destiny to fulfill, and with God’s help, she will achieve it. Her dream is to become a medical doctor.
Evelyn grew up in extreme poverty and moved to live with her uncle, Andrew Wallace, after her father passed away from appendicitis in 2019. At just 13 years old and in Grade 3, she left her rural home to come to Harper, Maryland. Her mother, left to care for seven children, struggled to provide for them.

Evelyn was awarded a scholarship after her Grade 9 Graduation where she was selected Dux of the Graduating class. The Dux Award is given to the student with the highest academic achievement in a high school year. The term comes from the Latin dux, meaning “leader”. Evelyn not only excelled academically but also delivered an inspiring speech with poise and confidence. Below is her speech:

Theme: Success
“Success is a highly personal and subjective concept generally it refers to the achievement of one’s goals, the fulfillment of ambitions, and the attainment of a desired outcome. I am a student of determination and commitment. I was a student in the 6th Grade last academic year
(2022-2023) but with the help of determination and commitment, to the burning of my candles, I was promoted to the 7th grade. At the end of the academy year (2022-2023) I was promoted to the 8th grade. Because I am a student of determination and commitment I kept my candles on and took another promotion from the 8th grade to the 9th grade this academy year (2023 – 2024).
I got all these promotions because I was focused and committed to my studies and now here I stand pronounced as the Dux of the graduation Class! Ninth Grade.
I would like to give these few words of encouragement to my fellow students that Success is not a
destination but a Journey. It is not about achieving a finite goal but continually striving to become the best version of ourselves. To achieve success we must be willing to take risks, face challenges head-on, and learn from our failures. Above all success is about finding joy and purpose in the journey. It Is about embracing the present moment, celebrating our small victories, and staying true to our values and passions. By adopting this mindset we can unlock our full potential and create a truly fulfilling life. So let us strive for success.”

The Gbowee Peace Foundation awarded Evelyn a scholarship, allowing her to choose any school in Liberia. She selected the Haywood Mission Institute, where she is now thriving in Grade 10. She is a focused student and continues to excel in her studies.
In Grade 5, she was crowned Queen of Fatima Elementary in recognition of her exceptional academic performance, achieving an impressive overall mark of 90%.
